VIDEO: DIY Dip Dye Shorts
Why go out and buy those $160.00 dip dye shorts you’ve been coveting when you can just make them yourself? Yes, I said it! Whip out your tie-dying skills from those camp years and let’s get started on these DIY Dip Dye Shorts! Check out the video tutorial HERE.
Supplies:
- A pair of shorts (cut-offs work best)
- Bleach
- Scissors
- Tub/bucket
- Color Dye
- Salt
- Rubber Gloves
- Liquid Detergent
Step 1: Fill the bucket with bleach and pour in a little water to raise the liquid level. Dip the bottom 3/4 of the shorts into the bleach mixture. DO NOT leave them in for too long or the fabric will be ruined! I suggest about 10 minutes.
Step 2: After about 10 minutes, take the shorts out of the bleach and let them sit outside overnight. The bleach will act on the fabric creating a lightening effect, seen below.

Step 3: After the lightening process is complete, you can distress the fabric! By taking scissors and carefully ripping the fabric you can achieve the perfect distressed look.
Step 4: Once you’re done and you’ve picked out two colors that you would like to dye your shorts, mix the dye. Make sure to follow the instructions on the color dye that you buy. Mix both batches of colors, throw on some gloves and you’re ready to dye!
Step 5: Fold the shorts in half and only dip the mid section in the dye for about 5 minutes. Repeat on the other side. Depending on the richness of color that you want, you might have to hold the shorts in for less or more time.
Step 6: After wringing out the first dye from the shorts, dip them in the second dye. I left my shorts in the pink dye for about an hour and a half because the fabric wasn’t picking up the color that I wanted. Finally, the color came out wonderfully and I could lay them outside to dry overnight.
Step 7: Once they are dry, throw them in the wash (by themselves, if possible). You’re finished! Now you have DIY Dip Dye Shorts that you can wear all summer long!
