Step #1: Figure Out Your Spring Style

If you’re anything like us, your style changes (sometimes drastically) from season to season. So, decide if you are leaning towards girly, glam, or sophisticated (or maybe a combo) before you even look at your wardrobe. Your clothing should reflect who you are, so let your tastes guide you when you spring clean your wardrobe.

Step #2: Vision Test

Now it’s time to actually look at your closet and see what you have. You will want to really give it a thorough look and figure out if your wardrobe is balanced, meaning that you have approximately an even amount of work and play clothes, and a similar amount of pants and shirts. This will eliminate that dreaded what do I wear??  feeling each morning.

Step #3: Sorting Time

Get three plastic bags or bins and label them KEEP, TOSS and STORE. Only keep things that you have worn in the past six months and can see yourself wearing in the next six months. Toss anything that is ill-fitting, tattered or stained (you’re better than that) and store anything off-season. You will be amazed at how little you actually will want to keep when you go through the sorting process.

Step #4: Catwalk Central

Now that you have a slightly smaller closet full of clothes, it’s time to become a model! Try on everything you’ve kept, mixing and matching outfits that you’ve never tried before, so that you can really get a feel for how your clothes look and feel. This will make stumbling into your closet at 6am so much easier.

Step #5: Wash & Clean

Sometimes a beloved item of clothing is worn frequently without ever being washed. No need to be embarrassed – it happens to the best of us. Spring cleaning is the perfect time to run a few loads of laundry and make a trip to the dry cleaners to make sure you always look your best.

Step #6: Fill-In

Think of spring cleaning as an opportunity to start with a clean slate. Now you can invest in some key pieces (white button-downs, black slacks, blazers, and heels) and some fun accessories without overlapping or repeating what you already own. Remember to only buy what you KNOW you’ll wear so that the next time you spring clean your wardrobe in 2014 will be a breeze!
