Spring 2012 Fashion Do’s and Don’ts

By Dana Farber — March 18, 2012

The weather is breaking and spring has finally arrived! If you’re anything like me, you’re ready to throw out the chunky sweaters and show a little more skin. For the latest spring fashion trends, make sure you follow a few important do’s and don’ts.

DO: Mix & Match

From clothing to handbags, you’ll see everyone mixing prints this upcoming spring. Some examples of this trend include putting together floral designs with stripes and snakeskin prints with solids. Be daring!

DON’T: Mix Print AND Colors

To avoid looking like a fashion disaster, try to keep all of your mixed designs within the same color family. As much as we loved the movies, it is no longer the ’80s, so pairing a pink polka dot dress with blue-striped tights is asking for a serious fashion citation.

Go Nude

DO: Incorporate Nude Colors into Your Closet

Neutrals are always in fashion and can be paired easily with your wilder print pieces. Choose a sleek tank, skirt or dress, or a nude-colored handbag and sandals. It also is a great nail polish color for summer! Popular nude shades include pale pink, beige and caramel. Choose the one that works best with your skin tone!

DON’T: Actually Go Naked

Unless you want to get arrested.

DO: Go Long

Maxi dresses and skirts are great for warm weather, but there are some rules to wearing them. High-heeled sandals or a quick bit of tailoring can keep the length of your maxi skirt from dragging on the ground as you walk.

DON’T: Forget What Century You Live In

Maxi skirts are a great look, but stick with solids and simple prints. Frills, lace and buttons look dated and can take away from the subtle style.

Get Sweet with Pastels

DO: Work Pastels into Your Wardrobe

Spring fashion runways were alight with a slew of new designs in feminine pastel shades. Mix pastel blazers and tops with dark-rinse skinny jeans, try floral blouses with pastel colored maxi skirts and purchase collared shirts to go with pastel pleated skirts.

DON’T: Wear Only Pastel

In order to avoid looking like a dyed Easter egg.
