Stay Safe in the Sun This Summer

While summer brings to mind beaches, bikinis and dark tans, with the devastating rise in the skin cancer numbers, that golden tan is becoming much less desirable. Not to mention the WRINKLES from squinting and unsightly age spots caused by those damaging rays. The myth is that those blessed with beautifully darker skin shades don’t need to worry. The fact is that everyone is at risk and should be thinking about how to stay safe in the sun - and the YOUNGER, the better. The most problematic damage can happen in your younger years through your 20′s.

Sometimes it is hard to feel like you’re ‘bucking the trend‘…doesn’t everyone want to be tan? Well, if you’re smart, NO! Still not convinced? –  look at this dazzling array of pretty celebs sans tans and follow the pale perfection trend this summer.

So, how do you start? Grab your beach bag (Target Natural Sequin Straw Tote) and pack it with smart sun protection for your entire body. First and foremost protect those eyes! Avoid cataracts and wrinkles by donning stylish shades like these Dior Striped Rounded Wayfarer Sunglasses. Next, focus on a nice base for your bod. Start with a lotion sunscreen such as Clinique Sun SPF 30 Body Cream. Add your favorite sunscreen to your daily routine – apply immediately after showering and be sure to re-apply sunscreen after a long period of time, exercise or after swimming. Another part of your morning routine should be to protect your scalp and that gorgeous hair color (that you may have paid a bundle for) with Ojon Color Sustain™ Gloss Finishing Hair Spray with UVA/UVB protection and just the right finish for your lovely locks. On the go? Hampton Sun Continuous Mist Sunscreen SPF 70 can be applied to wet or dry skin! One hot new product is powder sunscreen, like BareMinerals SPF 30 Natural Sunscreen. It’s so easy to apply any time over your makeup (and even on your ears – don’t forget them…it hurts when they’re burnt). Clarins Sunscreen Stick For Sun-Sensitive Areas SPF 30 High Protection UVB/UVA goes on quickly under eyes, on your nose (on your kids) ~ easy application is a breeze! Last but not least, don’t forget to protect those lips with Shiseido Sun Protection Lip Treatment SPF 36.

If you’re headed out, keep smart sun protection on hand. What’s easier than a hat in your bag? Choose any of these fab hats from Blomingdale’s to stay safe in the sun! Many are crush-proof styles that can be carried around in your beach bag, your car or even your purse. Of course the hat will shield your hair (yeah – no brassy color!) and your ears  - but be careful to shade your face as well. Wider rims even shade your neck and that (ever aging) chest area!

One interesting development in sun research is the fact that UV rays can penetrate your clothing. So much for slapping on the thin white t-shirt over your bikini! As always, it is fashion to the rescue with many stylish offerings made of fabrics which provide just the smart sun protection you need!

Athleta is one of the best at providing a variety of great smart sun protection options. Pictured here are the Printed Pack Everywhere Dress, Pilayo® Dipper Pant, Sidekick Tunic, Intrepid Cap Sleeve Sun Shield, Swagger Skort, Latitude Dress.

Whatever your day has in store for you be sure to be prepared, be smart, be protected, and stay safe in the sun this summer!

I can’t resist getting just a little bit of a tan, to tone down the pasty shade of my skin, but I definitely take measures to protect my skin from burning. I’ve always been careful to wear sunscreen in the sun, and I think it’s slowed down the progress of wrinkles and aging on my face.
